About US
The Rakai Health Sciences Program RHSP was established in 1987 as a collaboration between researchers at Makerere, Columbia and John Hopkins Universities, the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institutes of Allergy & Infectious diseases and the International Centre for Excellence Research ICER. This was as a result of the first identification of clinical AIDS in Rakai district Uganda in 1982 by Drs. Sewankambo and Serwadda. The initiation of the Program, then known as Rakai Project led to a series of clinical studies characterizing the disease and its epidemiology; and also brought the partnership with other colleagues including Professor Maria Wawer and Prof Ronald Gray.
 
Job Summary The Social & Behavioral Sciences Research Officer works directly with the department of Social and Behavioral Sciences of Rakai Health Sciences Program. On a day-to-day basis, he/she participates in the department’s main activities which include research participants’ mobilization and sensitization, participants’ recruitment and interviewing and data management.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities 
To participate in ongoing mobilization, participant recruitment and sensitization about Qualitative Research QR and other RHSP research activities within the study communities.
To ensure that all research instruments are prepared and taken to the field.
To work with the team leader and community mobilizers to identify key informants and FGD participants and to schedule with them when and where to hold interviews and discussions.
To conduct all data collection, timely transcription and data handling using appropriate and ethically sound qualitative research techniques and according to the developed research protocols and Standard Operating Procedures SOPs.
To maintain regular contact with the team leader and to pass on completed transcripts and other forms to him/her.
To bring to the attention of the team leader any problems that are encountered in the field.
Participate in developing, preparing and /or fine tuning the instruments for field work.
Participate in training for new and ongoing qualitative research studies.
Participating in qualitative research data analysis.
To keep proper custody of program property like computers, laptops, recorders, etc.
To attend to any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor from time to time.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The ideal applicant must hold a University Degree in Humanities and Education.
At least one year’s experience in medical research using qualitative research methods in a reputable organization.
Proficiency in the use of computers
Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing Luganda and English.
Good presentation and report writing skills.
Ability to work in a busy environment under minimal/ no supervision.
Ability to ride a motorcycle is a MUST and valid riding permit.
