Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda’s largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970.
 
Job Summary  Maintain the University’s computing environment by identifying network requirements; installing upgrades; monitoring network performance and administer the backbone equipment including core routers, firewalls and voice routing servers.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities 
Establish network specifications by conferring with users; analyzing workflow, access, information, and security requirements; designing router administration, including interface configuration and routing protocols;
Establish network by evaluating network performance issues including availability, utilization, throughput, good put, and latency; planning and executing the selection, installation, configuration, and testing of equipment; defining network policies and procedures; establishing connections and firewalls.
Maintain network performance by performing network monitoring and analysis, and performance tuning; troubleshooting network problems; escalating problems to vendor.
Secure network by developing network access, monitoring, control and evaluation, maintaining documentation;
Prepare technical users by designing and conducting training programs; providing references and support;
Upgrades network by conferring with vendors; developing, testing, evaluating and installing enhancements;
Meet financial requirements by submitting information for budgets; monitoring expenses;
Protects organization’s value by keeping information confidential;
Document network services and procedures as they evolve.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The ideal applicant must hold a Masters degree, in any ICT network specialization or Engineering Telecommunications, Electrical, Electronic discipline.
An Honors Bachelor’s, degree in either any ICT Network specialization or Engineering Telecommunications, Electrical, Electronic discipline.
Minimum of three 3 years relevant working experience
Knowledge and hands on experience in Network Performance Tuning, LAN & WAN network management as well as Network Design and Implementation;
Good knowledge of the Unix operating system;
Good knowledge of the design, installation and operation of large LAN and WAN;
Good knowledge of the design, installation and operation of large electronic mail systems.
Good knowledge of computer networking and performance monitoring, including relevant experience in routing, data and voice service provision;
Good interpersonal skills;
Good conceptual skills;
Output oriented;
