IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory services including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab & Translational Lab, Global Health Security and Health System Strengthening.
 
Job Summary The Infectious Diseases Institute received funding from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention CDC to implement a project, Strengthening Partnerships for Preparedness and Response in Uganda under the Global Health Security Department. The goal of this project is to Protect and Improve Health Globally Building and Strengthening Public Health Impact, Systems, Capacity and Security.  One of the components under the Project, Emergency Response is aimed at   rapidly strengthening emergency response systems for COVID-19 aligned to the National COVID-19 Resurgence Plan.  The purpose of this recruitment is to deploy volunteers with outbreak response experience across different disciplines to contribute to this objective.
 
The main role of the laboratory technician, Assistant or clinical officer will be to support daily analysis for COVID-19 samples, EQA and Internal Quality Control processes, perform PoCT RDT, Support bedside or ward rounds and compile daily updates on laboratory performance. Data analysis, compilation of reports, and uploading of results into the Results Dispatch System.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities 
Support COVID-19 sample collection from clients, Health care workers, critically ill patients in HDU or ICU.
Support the mobile sample collection team during emergencies.
Ensure safe and secure transportation of samples to testing laboratories CPHL, UVRI.
Support retrieve results from the RDS and dispatch results to respective destinations.
Train and mentor the laboratory staff and clinical teams on sample management.
Implement best practices of Biosafety Biosecurity and waste management procedures at sample collection points within the COVID-19 centre.
Monitor daily consumption of logistical requirements for COVID-19 sample management.
Compile daily, weekly and monthly laboratory COVID-19 reports as per key performance indicators.
Support daily reporting to national reporting structures ODK, paper based and electronic systems.
Any other duties assigned.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The ideal applicant must hold a Diploma or certificate in medical laboratory technology or Clinical medicine from a recognised institution
Experience of 1 year working in the COVID-19 response, HDU and ICU
In-depth knowledge and experience in COVID-19 response
Good Clinical Laboratory Practices with high level of professionalism
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Active Registration with the Allied Health Professional Council
Experience of 1 year working in the COVID-19 laboratory response.
In-depth knowledge and experience in COVID-19 response.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledgeable on the National Sample transport and results system
