The company achieved a major milestone when the Ugandan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development officially granted it a 21-year Large-Scale Mining License (LML0344). This project aims to establish one of the largest industrial developments in the Karamoja sub-region.
Job Summary
The Mining Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, coordinating, and optimizing mining operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective extraction of limestone and other mineral resources required for clinker production. The role supports mine planning, drilling and blasting, production management, equipment utilization, safety compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives to achieve production targets while maximizing resource recovery and operational efficiency.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Mine Planning and Design
- Prepare and implement short-term, medium-term, and long-term mine plans
- Design haul roads, benches, pits, dumps, and other mine infrastructure
- Monitor mining activities to ensure compliance with approved mine plans and designs
- Analyze geological and survey data to optimize mine development and production
Production Management
- Monitor daily mining operations to ensure achievement of production targets
- Coordinate drilling, blasting, excavation, loading, and hauling activities
- Optimize mining methods and operational processes to improve productivity
- Ensure uninterrupted supply of limestone and other raw materials to the clinker plant
Drilling and Blasting Operations
- Develop drilling and blasting plans and supervise implementation
- Monitor blast performance and recommend improvements to enhance fragmentation and productivity
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and use of explosives in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Analyze blasting results and implement corrective measures where necessary
Equipment Utilization and Performance
- Monitor equipment productivity, availability, and utilization
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime
- Evaluate operational performance and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency
- Monitor fuel consumption and other operational costs
Safety, Health, and Environmental Management
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health regulations, mining laws, and company policies
- Conduct risk assessments, workplace inspections, and incident investigations
- Promote safe mining practices and environmental stewardship
- Support environmental management, rehabilitation, and sustainability initiatives
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Collect, analyze, and interpret production and operational data
- Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, and annual mining reports
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and recommend corrective actions
- Maintain accurate records of mining activities and operational performance
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve mine productivity, efficiency, and cost performance
- Participate in mining optimization and expansion projects
- Support the implementation of new technologies and best practices in mining operations
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline from a recognized institution
- Professional registration with a recognized engineering body is an added advantage
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience in open-pit mining, quarry operations, limestone mining, or a similar mining environment
- Experience in drilling and blasting, mine planning, and production management
- Proficiency in mine planning and design software such as Surpac, Minescape, AutoCAD, Vulcan, or similar applications
- Strong knowledge of mining regulations, occupational safety standards, and environmental management requirements
- Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills
- Excellent planning and organizational abilities
- Strong understanding of open-pit mining operations
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, mine plans, and production data
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work effectively in a remote mining environment
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability
