Job Summary
The Infectious Disease Surveillance Technical Advisor must meet or exceed the required qualifications listed below. This individual should be a subject matter expert who will assist with the technical surveillance aspects of the project, including developing and implementing policies and processes, and ensuring quality delivery of service on surveillance activities in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the day to day technical and operational aspects of projects in Uganda.
- Support the development, coordination, and implementation of surveillance activities in the programmatic workplan including epidemiological surveillance, laboratory surveillance of zoonotic diseases, and outbreak investigation.
- Support regional technical staff members ensuring project activities align with work plans.
- Review and revise project reports, publications, and external communications.
- Coordinate with ministries of health, district health staff, and development partners.
- Provide input on national guidelines and policies for disease surveillance.
- Serve as a technical expert aligning with International Health Regulations.
- Assist in producing high-quality data outputs like situation reports and bulletins.
- Support internal learning on infectious disease surveillance within PATH.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, veterinary medicine, or related field.
- At least 5 years of international experience in epidemiological surveillance systems.
- Experience with USG-funded projects or technical implementation.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate staff across multiple projects.
- Expertise in zoonotic diseases, outbreak investigation, and surveillance systems.
- In-depth knowledge of public health trends and epidemiological principles.
- Strong analytical skills and experience with DIHS2 tools.
- Prior NGO, government, or private sector experience preferred.
- English proficiency required; willingness to travel within Uganda (25%).
