Job Summary
The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing all engineering and maintenance operations within the dairy processing plant to ensure optimal performance, safety, and efficiency of equipment and infrastructure. This role plays a critical part in supporting production goals by implementing preventive maintenance programs, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
The Engineering Manager will coordinate cross-functional teams, manage capital projects, and provide technical leadership to ensure the plant’s mechanical, electrical, and utility systems operate reliably and sustainably. By aligning engineering strategies with business objectives, the role contributes directly to product quality, operational cost control, and long-term growth of the dairy enterprise.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Engineering & Maintenance Oversight
- Supervise daily maintenance activities to ensure minimal downtime and maximum equipment reliability
- Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs
- Manage plant utilities including steam, refrigeration, water, and compressed air systems
- Ensure all machinery and systems meet health, safety, and environmental standards
Project Management
- Lead capital projects including equipment upgrades, plant expansions, and automation initiatives
- Prepare budgets, timelines, and resource plans for engineering projects
- Coordinate with contractors, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure timely delivery
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with local and international dairy industry regulations (Ergun’s, ISO, HACCP)
- Maintain documentation for audits, inspections, and certifications
- Promote a culture of safety and enforce safety protocols across engineering operations
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and mentor engineering and maintenance staff
- Conduct performance reviews and set KPIs for the engineering team
- Foster collaboration between engineering, production, and quality assurance departments
Continuous Improvement
- Analyze equipment performance data to identify inefficiencies and recommend solutions
- Implement lean manufacturing and energy-saving initiatives
- Stay updated on emerging technologies in dairy processing and automation
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering or related degree
- 2-3 years of experience managing people and /or processes in a manufacturing environment. High speed manufacturing and food experience preferred.
- Must be registered with Uganda Engineers Board
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication and presentation skills to all levels of the organization
- Computer proficient: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) required. SAP knowledge
- Ability to work off/any shift(s) if necessary. Must be able to receive calls pertaining to plant issues when not on duty.
- proven track record in a Food or Fast-Moving Consumer Goods company
- Fast paced and automated site.
- You will have excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to think quickly and make clear and decisive decisions.
- Dairy experience would be preferred.
